Monochromes

"They sicken of the calm who know the storm" Dorothy Parker

James started to paint the monochromes in 2003, he had specialised in mono-printing whilst at University in Leeds and had an idea to used prepared board as a surface similar to an etching plate. Whereas monoprints can be highly unpredictable James found he could incredible subtlety of tone and texture, without then having to go through the anxiety of wondering if the image would be transferred via the usual printing method. James also used this method in a later development painting over the original sketch using colour.

“I love producing these pieces. The process feels a lot like sketching with much trial and error, they have a pure energy, one of searching and finding”  James Naughton 2016
