Gold Rush
Today sees the first day of the initial Canyon phase and I feel that over the last few weeks I’ve given myself a very good idea of how the rest of the project may progress. Following the trip structure seems to be working, both in terms of a natural route for the work to develop and the different destinations to look forward to as with any journey.
I am approaching these studies of the canyon with a relish founded in experience, rather than the hopeful anticipation of a few weeks ago. It’s as though I’ve found a key to open the treasure trove of gold and vibrant hues that await in depicting the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
The act of viewing then painting the Canyon feels like a privilege, although there are dangers in being too tentative or overwhelmed by the subject’s awesome grandeur.
These early pieces are very encouraging. I’m happy with the rich colour I’ve handled confidently and my recall of the juxtaposition of textures in the rocks which help in conveying the very dramatic distances involved in these views.
I can’t wait to go bigger and then much bigger, with this enticing phase offering a tremendous challenge.
